2019 AIPPI World Congress

Halise Atabay

The annual AIPPI World Congress was held in London, United Kingdom between September 15-18, 2019.

Ms. Aynur Akcaot (trademark agent) and Ms. Halise Atabay (patent agent) represented Stock Industrial Property Services A.S. at this Congress, both of whom were among the contributors of the Study Questions of “Consumer Survey Evidence” and “Plausibilty” respectively on behalf of the Turkish National Group.

The Congress agenda was very busy. Study Questions of “Plausibility”, “Consumer Survey Evidence”,  “IP Damages For Acts Other Than Sales” as well as “Copyright in artificially generated works” were debated during the Congress and final resolutions were adopted as a result of Study Committee Meetings, Plenary Sessions and Executive Committee Meetings with the purpose of helping harmonization of national and international IP laws all over the world.

Besides Study Questions, hot topics such as “Patents and Artificial Intelligence”, “Post-grant Amendments”, “Forming Portfolios for FRAND Licensing”, “BREXIT & IP”, “The Art of IP – Museums & Architecture”, “Recent Developments in SPCs and Patent Term Extensions”, “Protecting Trade-Secrets in the EU – new and imroved?” were covered during the Congress.

Another beneficial Panel Session that the London 2019 Congress covered was the Mock Trial on “Designs”, which was planned to demonstrate the general nature of designs litigation and to highlight many of the key issues in designs litigation, including scope of protection, validity, infringement and remedies.

The participants also enjoyed the art and history of London by events organized by AIPPI: the   Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception held in the Westminster Hall, Women in AIPPI and Cultural Evening held in Victoria and Albert Museum, the Young AIPPI Forum and Closing Dinner at the fantastic atmosphere of the Alexandra Palace.

As in the previous years, the AIPPI World Congress offered a great opportunity for all  participants not only to learn about, brainstorm and discuss various areas of IP law but also    network with many colleagues from different parts of the world and enjoy the splendid city.
